Like many music teachers, we love using picture books with our classes! We have a list of literacy resources to accompany each one of our units in Music Makers - Book One, coming soon! Check out these great books to use with our units, or use them on their own to create music with your students.
The very quiet Cricket
An oldie but a goodie, The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle is a great book to use with your primary classes! The book supports creativity with students through introducing different characters who can each be represented by instruments, pitched or non-pitched. There are also many opportunities for movement! It fits great with our Bugs unit! |
Lights Out Night's Out
Lights Out, Night's Out is a super fun glow in the dark book that we included in our list of extended literacy resources for the Music Makers - Book One Light Unit. Tons of sound and movement words are embedded in the rhyming couplets, all set at night time in the forest. The story setting lends itself to all sorts of movement with light up props! This is a great one to explore with your students. |
Locomotive
Locomotive is full of vivid, poetic text that describes the transcontinental railway. It fits perfectly with our upper-elementary transportation unit! Full of great imagery and onomatopoeia, each page can serve as the foundation of a piece on its own or students can reenact and create vivid soundscapes with the entire book! |
Enjoy these literacy treasures with your students!
